April 28 - Commemorates Tragic Workplace Incidents

Workers Memorial Day has special significance to me, as I lost my job and my home because I requested safer working conditions. My choice was to work in unsafe conditions or lose my job and my home. I am not the only person who has had to make this difficult decision. Every day people continually make this decision. Dying should not be part of the job.

If you are trying to decide whether you should continue to work in unsafe conditions where you may lose your life or face losing all your material belongings - I understand how difficult this decision can be. I am glad I decided to leave a job with unsafe working conditions. At least I am alive to be able to write this post.
Each year thousands of people needlessly lose their lives through illness or injury because they had to work in unsafe conditions. Do you know someone who has lost a dear friend or family member that would be with them today if they hadn't gone to work? This post has a growing list of free resources that you might find helpful in observing Workers Memorial Day.

About Workers Memorial Day

Official Statement by the United States Department of Labor: Occupational Safety & Health Administration
Every year, on April 28, the nation recognizes Workers Memorial Day. This is the day we pay our respects to those who lost their lives on the job, and recognize the impact these tragic losses have on families, co-workers, and communities. This year, we also recognize that, more than a year into the pandemic, every day essential workers, many of whom are people of color and immigrants, have put their lives on the line during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many were sickened or died as a result of just going to work - for simply doing what they had to do to support their families. They were healthcare workers, grocery workers, meatpackers, nurses, delivery drivers, farmworkers, law enforcement officers, teachers, and sanitation workers. We remember and honor every worker who has lost their life to largely preventable fatal injuries and illnesses, and we commit ourselves to fighting to make sure that others do not suffer the same terrible fate.

Each year there are several Workers Memorial Day observances in the United States. These events often have keynote speakers from a variety of industries who share the importance of safe workplaces for everyone or sometimes who address how people can help support the friends and family of people who have lost loved ones due to workplace incidents.

They were family members - spouses, children, siblings, grandparents, friends, and coworkers. See more details on the virtual Workers Memorial Wall.

Workplace Death Prevention Resources

How can you help prevent workplace deaths? Sometimes people will say, "If I had only known that the workplace was so unsafe, I wouldn't have taken the job." While it is not possible to preview all posts. There is one resource I do know about that some people find useful when making career decisions - Glass Door. On Glass Door, you can read company reviews by former employees. This can sometimes help you make a more informed decision about whether to work at a place or not.
Another very good thing to try is prayer. It is amazing what can happen when you pray. There are people alive today who have prayed and God has sent them dreams or even delayed them in weird and unusual ways to protect them from fatal injuries.
